This great festival of Chhath Puja will start from November 8. The first day of this great festival starts with a bath. According to the Hindi Panchag, the Kharna of Chhath Puja takes place on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. After taking bath, there is Kharna which is also known as Lohanda. Prasad is made for Chhath Puja on the day of Kharna. Fasting is observed for the whole day of Kharna and then in the evening Kheer is eaten as Prasad. Chhath Puja is concluded with the second Arghya of the morning with the first Arghya of the evening.It is a four-day festival and special care is taken of cleanliness. There is no place for mistake in this festival. The rules for observing this fast are so difficult, due to which it is also known as Mahaparva and Mahavrata.


Chhath has special significance in Uttar Pradesh and especially in Bihar. Chhath is not just a festival, but a great festival, which lasts for a full four days. It begins with bathing and eating, which ends by offering arghya to the setting and rising sun. This festival is celebrated twice a year. First time in Chaitra and second time in Kartik. The Chhath festival celebrated on Chaitra Shukla Paksha Shashthi is called Chaiti Chhath and the festival celebrated on Kartik Shukla Paksha Shashthi is called Kartiki Chhath.

This festival is celebrated for family happiness and prosperity and for getting desired results. It also has a distinct historical significance.


It is believed that Chhath Devi is the sister of Sun God and to please her, considering the importance of sun and water in the vital components of life,Considering them as witnesses, worshiping and thanking Lord Surya, this worship is done on the banks of Maa Ganga-Yamuna or any holy river or pond. Shashti Maa i.e. Chhath Mata is the goddess who protects children. By observing this fast, the child gets the boon of long life.

It is mentioned in the Markandeya Purana that Prakriti Devi, the presiding deity of the universe, has divided herself into six parts. The sixth part of her is best known as the Mother Goddess, who is the Manas daughter of Brahma. She is the goddess who protects children. This goddess is worshiped on the sixth day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month.This goddess is worshiped six days after the birth of the child. With their prayers, the child is blessed with health, success and longevity. In the Puranas, the name of this goddess has been described as Katyayani, who is worshiped on the sixth date of Navratri.


Chhath festival started from Mahabharata period

According to Hindu belief, the legend is prevalent that Chhath festival started from the Mahabharata period. This festival was first started by Suryaputra Karna by worshiping the Sun. It is said that Karna was an ardent devotee of Lord Surya and he used to offer Arghya to him by standing in water for hours every day. He became a great warrior only by the grace of Surya. Even today this tradition of offering Arghya is prevalent in Chhath.
